All the basic principles that form the "RPG" as we know it all came from D&D... D&D certainly gives you a fuckload more freedom though. Ever think some "crucial" character in a videogame RPG is annoying as fuck... well if it were D&D, odd's are he wasn't too crucial and you could stab him in the face. Sounds like fun to me.
