What function doesn't Trillian have?

As far as I know, it does AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and IRC, probably more with add-ons and shit. Even just the basic Trillian does all of those. And in my opinion, it's IRC is a lot simpler to use for your average dumbfuck user.

I picked up Trillian because I used to log on Yahoo! Messenger as well as AIM, but I no longer do and just never switched back to AIM proper. I never really looked at everything Trillian does. ;)

Trillian is better than AIM even if you only use the AIM client on Trillian.

Having trouble getting Trillian to work with this, but I've never used IRC before.

Trouble? In what way. It worked fine with me. 30 seconds to set up and it was sorted.

No matter what nickname I chose, it said it was taken. Considering I used a few damn oddball ones makes me think that I simply failed to set it up correctly.
