2nd joke..
The bastard charges you 25 dollars, the bellbastard takes 2, and you get back 3. 25 + 2 = 27 + 3 = 30, Theres ur missing dollar. |
There is no other dollar.
|
Heh, thats like the cheaters way of proving it. You basically said, well, you spent $30, the bellhop took $2, so $30-$2=$28, and he gave you back $3, so $28-$3=$25...
You just restated the problem. The question is saying, that if the bellhop took $2, and you each received $1 back, you in essence paid $9 per person, plus the $2 taken, which is $29. Why did this happen is what the riddle is asking... |
Alright, another way of looking at it:
Say you spend $30, like already stated. You get to your room, and the clerk says shit, it was only $25. So, instead of having the bellhop send back $5, he says, might as well just send back all the money and have them break up the difference however they want to. Again, the bellhop takes $2, and gives them $28 dollars this time. Which cannot be split up into $9 per person. This is basically what was stated before, so why is this different? |
There is no other money..
30 / 3 is $10 each, right. 25 / 3 is $8.33 each spent. The guy pays them the $3. That's 28 / 3 = $9.33 each. So they all got another dollar. That $28 leaves the $2 left over.. that comes out to $30. |
But if the guy gave them each $1 back, and they initially spent $10 each, how come you are calculating it to be $9.33, not $9 like rational would like you to think? That is the question. It's actually a really basic, trivial riddle, but for some reason it is alluding all of you...
|
This is how it works...
The "extra" $2 is subtracted, not added. Each person pays $10 to equal $30. The final price is actually $25. The hotel has $30. Each person is given back $1, and the guy takes $2. Thus, $30 - $5 = 25. 30 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 = 25 Another way to look at it: With each person paying $9 the hotel recieves $27. The bill is only $25, so the guy pockets $2. 9 + 9 + 9 - 2 = 25 It's not even a riddle. It's a cleverly phrased question. |
Thank friggin' God... :)
It really isn't a riddle, but it definitely confused people here. The wording is genius, and I knew it would mess with a few heads. Basically, just a reiteration. When they said he pocketed $2, everyone automatically assumed, alright, $30-$2=$28, but its actually, $25+$2=$27 returned. Just tricky wording. |
Yeah I have tried explaining that to people, only a few understood it
|
I still don't really understand how the questioning is supposed to trick me, I didn't get it at all.. it seemed really logical to me the way I explained it. I just thought you were really stupid for not getting that.
|
Since you don't seem to understand where you went wrong, let me explain it to you very clearly.

Get it now? |
So you're saying its not 25 + 3, but 30 - 3 ? I get it.
I guess too much math class makes these things seem too linear :( |
Your addition and subtraction are done in different orders, it threw me off at first, but I caught on.
|
Yeah $30 they paid - $3 they got back - $2 the guy kept = $25 which is the price of the place
|
Next Riddle plz. haha, Do the hard one this time titus.
|
I'll attempt to give a hard one next time. It hopefully won't be a play on words, an odd sequential (If you can call it that really), but rather an actual riddle with thinking involved. Nothing too technical though, like many I've seen that involve massive integrals and extreme knowledge in basically useless Mathematical facts.
