Ubuntu + Beryl
Guys, I have Ubuntu + Beryl installed on my system and it kicks ass. It does have the terminal which is pretty much like a more advanced installation program, almost like registry for windows but more along the lines of a command line style.
Vista sucks big, fat, hairy, monkey balls. If you just take a look at the system requirements on it they went ridiculously out of hand and it takes up a bit of space on your hard drive. So why spend hundreds of dollars on it when Ubuntu + Beryl are so much more bad ass and it's free? So, if you want to look at some videos on it take a look at my link in my sig. It comes in 32-bit and 64-bit. It looks like it would be a bit tasking, but it really is not. If you want to try it out I suggest you partition your drive using the ubuntu cd, you can download it straight from ubuntu.com or you can request a cd in the mail for free as well. A really good feature of ubuntu is that it runs the OS straight off the cd first so you can try it out and see if you like it. Then you can begin installing it by clicking on install on the desktop. While it's installing you can get on the internet! It automatically configures your internet connection from the cd... it's so bad ass, so you can go on here even when you're installing it if you wanted to. |
Heh, the terminal really isn't anything like the windows registry assuming Linux hasn't changed unrecognizably over the past year or so.
What is Beryl, exactly, if you don't mind me asking? |
I know, I was just trying to relate it to windows in some way lol. Now beryl is what gives it awesome effects. like burning the window, wobbly windows, the infamous desktop cube and so on.

It is it's own window manager. It's so bad ass, look at the video if you can, I'm at work hence why I posted this I'm bored as shit.
it runs the desktop in OpenGL mode, in the same way that vista uses that aero shit to run it in DirectX. it's a bloatware technology that nobody in the world actually needs
Nobody needs it, but it looks awesome.
that is why we have global warming
Yes, we have global fucking warming because of an OS. Stick to the topic lol.
I believe he is refering to wastefull "cool things" in general.
It's all about presentation. I'd love to work on one of those *nix boxes just because the whole 3d concept sounds amazing.
Ubuntu = I can't handle a REAL version of Linux.
Haha, it's pretty user-friendly, I'm not into Linux as much as a bunch of my friends and they told me about Ubuntu. The Linux kernel is so damn good. All the programs load so fast and smoothe unlike windows.
Ah.. I am just messin with you... I am very sarcastic.
Josh, you've actually convinced me to download Ubuntu + Beryl. If I need any assistance, would it be alright if I instant messaged you?
What is this Ubuntu + Beryl? And if it kicks so much ass, is there a mac version?
Did you know that in your sig, the white is transparent unless you're using IE6 or lower? That makes it black on very dark color on Synthesis.
Im too retarded to fuck with this.
My laptop is too important to me haha if i messed something up just to have some snazzy features id kick my own ass. |
How do you get ubuntu?
Yea man, if you need any help you can IM me, try IMing me after 9:00pm eastern time if you want to talk. I'll be on, so just hit me up after that time on most days. Sorry I've been inactive I went to Memphis, Tennessee
So, installed Ubuntu and Beryl. To be honest, I'm not really impressed with either.

It's not that...it's horrendously buggy. And whenever I go to get help with it, I get "It's not a problem with Beryl, it's everything else." |
And thus we have the biggest problem with the open source community: the fact that they're slow as hell in doing anything. It'll take forever for Beryl to be even remotely stable. Probably around 5 years. By then, we'll have the next version of Windows.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA, horrendously buggy? I'd consider that more along the lines of user error, if done right there's not a single bug, how can you even suggest that linux has more bugs than windows? I haven't had to restart my computer in forever, nor has it crashed.

And I ain't exactly what you'd call a guru, but I know my way around a *nix box. |

Lemme know when you get... ummm.. 2% of marketshare. Kthanx. |

It's free. Most people would consider that an advantage over Windows. Not having to pay for something is good. Its software alternatives are comparable to that of Windows. For most users, it's not the ideal desktop environment, though. It's lacking in certain key areas. It is not easier to use and set up than Windows. That is an enormous exaggeration that I see a lot of *nix users put out, myself included a few years ago. Linux is definitely harder to use than Windows. For one, many things even in Ubuntu require at least some level of CLI knowledge. Though this is simple once you are used to syntax, it is certainly intimidating to a newbie. Hardware support is limited in comparison to Windows. No, this is not a fault of *nix developers, but it's an advantage that Windows has over Linux. Open-source software is often incomplete and buggy. My complaint is when you download something, you don't really know what you're getting. Beryl, for instance, causes problems with my video drivers. My computer isn't horrendously old, nor is it straight out of the box. I got it in March '06. Linux offers a lot of customizability but tweaking and customizing your environment is certainly not a simple task, a fact that *nix proponents often fail to mention. Furthermore, I understand, even with open-source it is more often user error than program error. Being a user, I fall into that category. I'm not claiming to be infallible. However, I do tend to do my research before I complain about something. It's a known issue with Beryl. I'd appreciate it if you could keep snide written laughter to a minimal. If you must laugh at me, please read the entire post that you are laughing at, and make sure you're correct on the matter. Otherwise it just makes you look weak. Yes, when replying to Mantra I used pronouns in my first sentence. Shame on me. Later on in the post, though, I clarified that I was referring to Beryl and not Linux. It's highly insulting to be laughed at by someone who described the terminal as being analogous to the Windows registry. It hurts my ego. I have no choice but to go cut myself now. Thanks a lot. |
I cant figure out how to fucking install ubuntu on my PS3
