Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

I didn't see anyone else with a thread about it.

Just got it! It's awesome!

Dark-Madness 2008-06-13 10:26 PM

I have always enjoyed metal gear...then Splinter Cell came out and I lost interest.

To honest I would love to see some colaberation of the minds behind those two games. Metal Gear has an awesome cinematic feel during its cut scenes where as Splinter Cell is blah. But I have always liked SC's combat and mechanics much more than MGS. That and it seems every Metal Gear has an hour long segment where some cheesy Japanese love story occures right in the middle of the action. I say: Get the the f**king killing and be done with it!

Lenny 2008-06-18 01:44 PM

All I'm going to say is that BOOOM! Headshot with my silenced M4 features heavily in my stealth plans.

Goodlookinguy 2008-06-18 03:39 PM

You know, I gotta say, one of my favorite things in the game is the stealth. You stand against a wall or ground and your suit changes to the wall or ground. If that isn't cool, then I don't know what is. Though I did find number 3 more challenging stealth wise, especially how you had to change your costume depending on the situation. I definitely think they did another great job with the Metal Gear Solid series.

Lenny 2008-06-18 04:29 PM

I've just started Act 2, and my little FPS maniac inside me has had me put a scope on my M4 to headshot from afar, which is surprisingly useful. :p Methinks when I've finished the game as a mass-murdered, I'll go through and play as a sneaker.

Here's a nice statistic from my Act 1 performance - 1 death, 146 kills, 62 headshots. :)

Willkillforfood 2008-06-18 09:18 PM

My friend just rented it and is playing it. It's like a movie with little interactive bits so far, lol.

Lenny 2008-06-19 06:39 AM

I must say, I've never liked cutscenes as much as I like the ones in MGS4 - and it's easy to see how Kojima filled a dual-layer Blu-ray disc (50gb!). Saying that, though, the game itself is in no way lacking. I've been playing for 12 hours, and I reckon I'm about halfway through the second act. It took me about nine hours to finish Act 1, and I do believe there are five Acts, so it's a pretty lengthy game. Add in the myriad different ways of playing it and, well, you get the picture.

Lenny 2008-06-22 03:58 PM

I don't believe it! In 16 hours and 40 minutes, I got up to the point where Drebin whisks you away in his truck (near the end of Act 2, methinks?). A friend came over today and got to exactly the same point in 5 hours and 15 minutes. Sure, he was playing on Naked Normal whilst I'm going through on Solid Normal, but come on! His style of play is much more different to mine, too. Whilst I make an effort to sneak by, and silently headshot people, he ran in guns a-blazing all the time, as if he were playing an FPS like CoD4.

One must admire the game, though, as it allows so many different modes of play - my sneak/headshot mode, my friends' guns a-blazing mode, and I know others who got through the whole thing without killing a single person. Madness.

Willkillforfood 2008-06-22 05:35 PM

My friend beat the game in like 18 or 19 hours. He kept getting stuck on escort missions and the last act is a bit tough ...you'll see :D. The ending is way too long, but good.

Gah. I love counter-strike.

Hades-Knight 2008-07-06 06:51 AM

I played through it in a day......I was really upset about my $60......the game literally had about 1 hour of play with about 8 hours of cutscenes.

Each map felt so short, you could literally sprint from one end to the next without doing anything else

Lenny 2008-07-06 06:55 AM

Then force yourself to play it differently. As I said above, the game has a lot of ways it can be played - bet you can't take longer than me to get past Act 2. ;)

Set yourself challenges. How about trying to get through each Act without a single alert, or without a single kill?

My brother beat the game and is going for no kills. After that he's going for no alerts.

For me, I've yet to get very far in the game.

Skurai 2008-07-06 07:12 PM

I ain't got it, But my Girl has. and she's Eaten it inside and out.

She's got all (as in every) emblem, even that... that one, one the hardest mode, and the Chicken emblem...

She's had it about 2 weeks...

she's a freak.. :D

Lenny 2008-07-07 01:30 PM

I got one of the emblems, but I can't for the life of me work out which and what for. Might have been something to do with headshots or kills. Or even for taking so long to do so little.

as long as it's not Chicken emblem, then you're good. (She got Chicken at the end because she had nothing else to get.)

Have at least 150 alert phases

Continue the game more than 50 times

Nope, not yet. :p

I think I'm on about 70 alert phases, 300 kills, 3 continues, and 20 health items, with 17 hours of gameplay (and not even halfway through, yet!).

NonGayMan 2008-07-07 07:52 PM

I beat the game in 4 days. I liked it a lot, but the multiplayer is a little lackluster for me.

quikspy67 2008-07-07 10:03 PM

My friend brought it over yesturday, I love the the cut scenes, the gameplay, how octacon screams "snake? snake?!" still, and the graphics, the detail on everything how you can see each stich on the men's suits. From what I've seen I think it's amazing and I am going to get it for sure.

Greatest Gaming Review Ever. http://objectiveministries.org/zounds/gaming.html

:D

My brother pointed it out to me because he found a link to it from somewhere else. That is the funniest review of MSG4 I've ever seen. Not to mention, how can you review a game you've never played.

WetWired 2008-07-21 06:49 AM

I beat this game a while back. It definately has the best control scheme of all of them, once you unlearn the controls from the first three games (which I played for the first time just before playing MGS4). The game's graphics are amazing, the story is good, and I really like taking everything from your last run-through with you for the next. Despite all that, I still think MGS3 had a better storyline.

My first run-through, on Solid Normal, I got eagle, panther, lobster, inch-worm, and one other in 30 hours. I mostly used the M4 with a scope paired with a P90 for when things got hairy. For boss fights, I usually brought out the machine guns. I used sniper rifles a few times, but honestly usually the M4 with the scope was good enough. Halfway through Act 5, I finally bought my new best friend, the Barret light-fifty in bullpup configuration. This gun is a one shot take down or knock down (depending on where you hit the enemy) from across the map, is effective against anything that moves, fires off its 10 rounds fast enough to take down a mob of enemies before they can do much of anything, and is even effective no-scoping. Why would I need any other gun? (I should note, however, that I am constantly buying ammo for it since you won't find any on the field of battle and you can only hold 100 rounds)

I'm currently running through a second time on Big Boss Hard, looking for stuff I missed on my first run (like the chaff grenades, apparently  ). Doesn't really feel much more difficult, though, once I got to the Mk. II and got all my gear back. With my M82A2, the opposition is easily dealt with. So far, I'm to the boss fight in Act 2. I have found use for one late gun from the first run-through: the rail gun is a better way to get rid of helicopters than RPGs that can miss.

Willkillforfood 2008-07-21 07:46 AM

I thought the beauty and the beasts had fucking annoying voices from hell :p.

KagomJack 2008-07-21 12:01 PM

You definitely have made me want this game MORE than I did previously.

WetWired 2008-07-21 12:46 PM

So you won't feel so bad about killing the poor abused girls? As far as the B&B squad goes, I should add that while they have the same names as the FOXHOUND members from MGS1, the fights are quite different. Also, while I used the machine gun in my first run though, apparently the fights are beatable using completely non-lethal means. While for the no-kills badges I think you only have to finish them off non-lethaly, to unlock some gun you have to complete the main fight for all 4 B&B as well as the "frog" event with RAT PT 01 in act 1 non-lethally to collect 5 statues. I don't expect you can complete the main fight for many of the B&B non-lethally without using recovery items, though. Also note that if you finish them non-lethally you collect their heads as camo options, I think.

Willkillforfood 2008-07-21 07:56 PM

The railgun kicks ass. It's pwnage on a stick.

WetWired 2008-07-22 06:23 AM

The railgun is only okay. The long charge time is what kills it. Versus anything squishy, the M82A2 is definately superior. Versus anything that isn't going to give you a chance to charge, it's almost useless. I've taken down armor with the M82A2 before, and it really wasn't that hard; Irvings should go down within a clip, gun turrets may take more. Remember, the M82 is an anti-materiel weapon, which means that its primary duty is destruction of equipment from a distance, which is the same duty as a rail gun; the difference is that in the time you get off one fully charged shot with the railgun, the M82 could probably empty its 10 round magazine twice.

I've confirmed the thing about non-lethality in the B&B fights. If you use non-lethal takedown during the main fight, there will be a statue to collect during the finishing stage (it may or may not be near where you start). If you use non-lethal takedown to finish her, you get their face as a camo option. I'd like to take this opportunity to say that non-lethal takedown during the Raven fight was quite long and annoying.

Also, I found out that you can press square during mission briefings to control the Mk. II for fun and profit. Press triangle and L2 for a better view.

Agreed. It'd would only be better if it had tits and was on fire.

Wait... that's that one gun from Painkiller that shoots shurikens and lightning.

Xenn 2008-07-28 01:51 AM

I borrowed a PS3 so I could beat this game, and I beat it twice (second time on TB Extreme). I definately used the M82A2 for almost everything on my second runthrough, except the railgun for gekkos and occasionally the grenade launcher. I enjoyed the gameplay (camo is actually useful!) but the plot was lacking. The cutscenes were kind of intrusive too... there's really only about 30-40 minutes of actual gameplay in Act 5. Oh well, still a good game.

WetWired 2008-07-28 06:20 AM

I just finished my second run-through on Big Boss Hard. The only thing that felt a lot harder was the final fight with Liquid.

Xenn 2008-07-28 10:32 PM

I think you mean, "the final fight with Ocelot"

Ha ha ha

WetWired 2008-07-29 10:32 AM

No, the MGS3 part of the fight was easy either way. It was only the MGS1 and MGS2 segments which got stupid. Also, I was trying to avoid spoilers.

Lenny 2008-07-29 11:18 AM

Don't worry, means nothing to me yet. :p

19 hours, and I'm following someone through the start of Act 3.

WetWired 2008-07-29 05:50 PM

Something that escaped me there is that you can apparently avoid a lot of hassle by pretending to be Otacon or Campbell. Of couse, part of that might have been that it also escaped me that you could get their faces by bumping into them during the mission briefing...

Lenny 2008-07-30 10:59 AM

I've got the Otacon one (and Raiden with an open visor), but not the Campbell one - is that in the Act 4 briefing?

I'll try it with Otacon after I've downloaded the new Firmware update.

Xenn 2008-07-30 11:24 AM

You can also use the beauty masks and everybody will get the hots for you. The guy you're following says "looking for a real man?"

It's pretty funny

Lenny 2008-07-30 11:29 AM

Hahaha. I'll have to try that on my second run through. :p

Something that's been bugging me - is there any way to check what things you've unlocked? Things like emblems? I can't find anything under the Start Menu.

WetWired 2008-07-30 01:55 PM

You can check your progress toward them in the mission briefing. Just go to mission briefing and open your save then select a mission briefing. Your stats will be displayed on the orange ribbon near the bottom of the screen. You can also gain items for the main game in this manner. Campbell is in the Act 1 briefing.

WetWired 2008-07-31 06:48 AM

I just checked last night and found that you can watch your ammo deplete in the magazine when using the P90 in first person mode. The next question is if you can see it on your enemies' guns.

Lenny 2008-08-02 04:04 PM

Can't say I noticed any difference with the Otacon face... then again, I did go around with my silenced M4, and eventually the RPG for the vehicles.

A stealth game it may be, but stealth doesn't have to be all shadows and camoflauge. As long as they don't see you before you empty a magazine into the back of their head, or blow their vehicle sky high then, well, that counts as stealth, right?

Raging Raven woman next. Ack.

WetWired 2008-08-03 04:58 PM

Raven is a huge pain if you try to kill her non-lethally during the beast form. She moves arround too much and the only wide area stun weapon is the shotgun with v-ring shells (which I totally never realized untill I was reading up on technique for the final b&b fight)
