I really wish...
I wish I could be running this board, full-time and get paid for it, but that would never happen. Life usually never gives anyone what they want, does it? :)
No, but for real, if you had a choice between being a well-paid surgeon, or doing whatever you think is fun in life with a bit less money, what would you choose? (Taco, you're not permitted to answer, since you've already claimed that you want to be come a surgeon for personal reasons). Personally, I beleive that you won't get anywhere in life unless you try to do whatever you're interested in. |
Uh.. personally if I had a choice I'd go the money route.
Why, Graviton? Do you think life is all about money? Will it matter after we die? Will ANYTHING matter after we die?
I'm sick of seeing the common social status with people climbing up the social pyramid. The further you get, the more exhausted you are, and the narrower your path becomes. Why be like everyone else? Who decided the life should be a game of monopoly that allows you to file $28 billion lawsuits against tobacco companies? Money is just an abstract thing, one moment you don't have it, and the next moment, you win $50 million at the lottery. How would it feel to work for 40 years, just to see your poor friend who has enjoyed life for so long just surpass your economy in a matter of seconds? Wouldn't you wish you had done all the fun things in life already, instead of having spent 40 years, doing what you hate, hoping that you will become better than everyone else? No, I don't beleive that the money route is the way to go. |

I don't consider the lottery a factor at all, I won't play the lottery.. I'm not going to do what I *hate*, but I will do a boring job for a six figure salary. Also, 'boring job' = 'time to goof off on the computers when the boss isn't looking' If I wanted to do what I loved, I'd be playing MMORPG's my entire life. But I can't. |
same here. its important to get a job that you enjoy with a high pay check and wont be obsolete in the near future. if you cant, then go with the money. its hard to be happy when you're living out in the streets or having to worry about your budget all the time.
*GM and chruser, do you know what would be really cool? hired professional mods that will stay active. :D |
Heh, lets make it big like AOL and all get paid!
Well perhaps my "advanced age" can be of help here lol. I got a high paying corporate job right out of college with a major investment company (Fidelity). It was 12 hour days and office politics and the usual corporate middle mangement bullshit and backstabbing but I clawed my way up pretty far in a short time.
Then the market crashed and I was laid off with about 10,000 other smart ambitous young people. I was so disillusioned that I didnt even look for a job for 6 months. I decided to do something fun and for the next ten years I did all kinds of interesting things from lifeguard to white water rafting guide, no stress, all fun, and mostly outdoors. I only recently decided to rejoin the corporate world because I dont trust anyone but myself to provide for me in my retirement. (and it is NEVER to soon to think about planning for that) and that is where the easy bucks are to be made. I shopped around and found a management positon that allows me great freedom and quality of life and still pays a decent salary but... It is still pretty boring and not very challenging. I guess my point is that if you can do something you love and get paid for it well then you have found the best thing going. I took a lot of time off from "real jobs" and have never regretted doing it. The really hard part is finding out what you love :) |
Please, change that avatar. It's hard to take anyone seriously with that.
Fidelety investments? It sounds like a good company, but it has some crappy ads. :\
What? I thought my avatar looked kind of creepy?!? It does with night vision I think. Hows this one??

Damn your quick I was searching for it lol.

I'm not willing to be miserable for the sake of making money. If the cost of financial security is hating 90% of the time I'm awake, I'm not keen on the idea. If I find something I enjoy doing that pays enough for me to live on, I'll stick with it.
yeah i was go'n to say what if you want a multi million dollar job...I want to become and actress...man tom cruse makes 25 million a year...!!! I don't really see how you can amount to much if you don't do the things you like or love...? but that's just me...

Id suffer for 15 years so I could retire at 40 or so......
Still, my Dad is in the RCMP, and he doesnt want to retire, becuase its such a good time. And he gets payed well.
Yes, yes. Your brother told me all about that. Please don't have my ip banned!
err... Would you rather be happy when your at your job, and then mad cause when u get home u cant even eat what you want all the time cause the money isent that good, or would you rather goto work, hate it, but when you get home you have a big house, the best computer and whatever money you want....
I think your thinking , yeah ill do the job i like, but what if the job you wanna do is like 20k a year lol, How FAR back are you thinking? I think chruser means "Well if my dream job pays enough to make me live comfortably" but what if it paid very little? Id rather be making games, or doing customer support for online games (Game masters, administrators) or shit, Public Relations! those jobs roxx =x.... But its not a matter of pay for those, those jobs are hard as hell to get... |
What I'm saying is that life is a waste of time and space anyway, so why not enjoy it? Who cares if we die rich or not, as long as we have enough to live a somewhat decent life. Do you really think Bill Gates would die less happy if he lost $40 billion?
Ok yeah, there are people who can bring up gay shit like love, but id rather be rich, and doing whatever i want all day...Whoever said money cannot buy happiness is stupid as hell, Happiness dosent matter if you have money or not, theres a 50/50 chance you can be happy and not happy with or without money, changing your money wont effect happiness. There are certain things like maybe Hiking up a mountain, Yeah thats good but you cant do that unless u got the fucking cash to back that trip up, OR if you want a great wedding but u only make 20k a year, haha better get a motel and goto one of those 24/7 places. you DONT need to be rich but you DO NEED AT LEAST 60k+ a year to be happy, You think sitting in ur apartment with a leaky roof, diseises, constant shootings, smells like shit all the time HOW THE FUCK CAN U BE HAPPY, I HATE THIS DAMN THEORY THEY ALWAYS BASE IT ON UTTER CRAP OMFG... Yes you can be happy without being rich , but NO YOU CANNOT BE HAPPY BEING POOR THERES NO FUCKING way... gah fuck this its my opinon and im sticking to it
BTW im speaking out of a point of view from no religion whatsover, no afterlife, meaning, Whatever we do here is the ONLY THING WE EVER WILL DO, so you might as well be as important and rich as u can cause in the end ur fucking screwed
Sorry for the triple post but i dont spam much so whatever...
First of all , the rich people mostly never shard your opinons chruser, its always the people that are not rich, and when they become rich they just lost the opinons tottaly. Wtf is happiness? It is feeling good about yourself, fine lets leave at that, feeling good about yourself and what you have done. Now lets branch out into 2 paths and look at them . 1. Guy is born into poor family, grows up, gets a wife, gets a solid job, has kids, loves his family. Family makes around 60k a year, they are always trying to balance there budget, they are sad when they cant afford to do things they love and go on vacation, husband works constantly, but loves his life because of his family. The kids grow up, Man goes into late retirement with little money, and dies early, yeah hes happy because of his family. 2. Guy is born into family pulling in 6 figure income, rakes in job as game designer for some huge company (eq, squaresoft, etc). Has no family, climbs ladder, becomes extremly famous. You type his name in google and you have 1000's of results =p. He works 6 houres a day, and just plays games, gives advice, (designs). He goes home to huge house in his porche, marrys supermodel, who loves his money, but also gets to know and love him (Thats not impossible). Hes off half the year, takes up golf, and never worrys about anything, pays others to worry. Grows old, goes into retirement with millions, helps by donating to charitys, knows he made a diffrence in the world and his name will be spoken for years to come. Ok... Now lets compare those, 1 is about average, number 2 is like extremly lucky. Who is more happy? Lets do it like this, Count up every MINUTE each man is NOT worrying about stuff, and is enjoying himself and number 2 wins by a longshot. Did they share the SAME happiness in the end (Felt the same amount of happiness at one time or another) sure, probably, but 2 is happy alot longer then 1. 2 will be spoken about after hes dead (You can relate this to ancient rome and there view on life, they thought the more fame and money you had the more you made of your life, the more important you were, etc etc). Number 1 can say "Yeah well money does not buy happiness cause look im happy and i dont even have that much" but number 2 can say "Yeah Im as happy as number 1, but im happy all day, and i can do whatever i want".... Does money = happiness? No but money does make happiness alot easier and longer. |
Didn't realize you were that thought-provoking.
omg... im just in that kind of mood today...im gonna go post more
Don't you have, say, school?
Im IN school, the first 2 periods we dont even do anything... I just sit here for 2 houres reading zelaron.... im about to go anyway, then ill be back on a couple mins at lunch

Uh, I'd go the I enjoy my programming job route. Sure, I could be a surgeon and make lots of money, but if I make a mistake I get sued, if someone dies during an operation I'd be asking myself what I could have done to prevent it. Too much stress, and not enough interest for me. At my job, sure there's plenty of stress, but it is tempered by the fact that I really do enjoy what I do. And so what if I don't live in the rich part of town and throw away money on a whim--I make plenty of money to get the things I really want, and my work gives me a sense of fulfillment. The more you put into something, the more you get back (as a general rule): if you put all your effort into your school work in collage, you'll get a better GPA and be better prepared for your career; if you put all your effort into your job, you'll advance in it. You'll soon get tired of expending the effort if you don't enjoy your job. Others will pass you in reputation and position. A surgeon can't really afford a reputation of being so-so.
