GFX Card

Another buy question :D! I was lookin for gfx cards, and i was thinking, which is better.. ati radeon, or geforce cards? *note i know nothing about gfx cards, just where they go :D*

DaFrigginDoctah 2003-03-23 08:48 PM

I keep hearing that Radeons are better, I've always found that GeForces suit me quit nicely.
So either one will work. Just so long as your system can support it (psu, mb, etc) you should be fine. What are your system specs (mother board, cpu, etc)?
And what kind of cash are you willing to spend?

Eddie_Perez 2003-03-23 10:07 PM

Oh and make sure your motherboard has an agp slot for your vid. card, cuz pci vid cards suck.

`Insolence` 2003-03-23 11:19 PM

ill get back to with specs, going to bed.. i heard radeons arent much for gaming any way =\

Raab_Himself 2003-03-24 08:50 PM

radeon 9700 pro is the best card in the market at the moment

Medieval Bob 2003-03-24 09:06 PM

Geforce made an 8x model that's supposed to compete with the Radeon 9700 Pro, but it's not even comparable really.

`Insolence` 2003-03-25 04:06 PM

well i heard geforce is more gaming, and radeon is for other purposes (what, i do not know)

drivehappy 2003-03-25 05:07 PM

I've heard the GeForce 4 will work best with a AMD cpu. Either one, really. I have a GeForce 4 128mb and it works good. I haven't used a Radeon before, so I can't tell you which is better.

no, radeon is concerned with competing with nvidia and wouldnt make their best cards like that.

how do PCI cards suck?

Eddie_Perez 2003-03-26 06:15 PM

not sure, I just hear from all of my friends that they suck, I think its because pci is universal port thingy or whatever, and agp is made specifically for video cards.

EDIT: not saying that they suck, just saying that agp is betta...

Oridus 2003-03-27 01:47 PM

The GeForce line has a GeForce 4 MX 440 PCI card, which is the best pci card i've seen. As for pci vs agp, it's the data transfer rate, the ports are different, typically pci is slower. But with the pci geforce 4 mx 440, it runs just like AGP, very nice indeed. As for Geforce vs Radeon, it's all just a matter of opinion and preference, kinda like AMD and Pentium. In some aspects, one will do better than the other, usually in speed, but Performance, stability, and heat dissapation is a major factor in both of these, therefor, if you have the right kind of system to make your card work good, then it's just whatever you think is better. There is no specific proof that one is better than the other. In my mind, it's just opinion.

Well the best one is the Ti 4600, but you can also get Geforce 4's in 4200 in 4400. Im assuming 4600 is what you got from your post

DaFrigginDoctah 2003-03-28 05:32 PM

I love my Ti4600. :)
The last card I was using was a NVIDIA TNT2. ={ Which I had been using for a long ass time. This card is going to last me the same amount of time, since I never have any money.

Aggyrwayter 2003-03-28 05:45 PM

Radeon 9800 Pro (yes 9800) is better than the Geforce FX! Hyah!

ask_rabber 2003-03-28 06:03 PM

i go for geforce cards because there drivers seem better. they are released more often, easier to install/uninstall id say, and some of the drivers are also universal. not to mention that the nvidia cards are currently cheaper for near same performance. as far as the type goes, id get a geforce fx. it is about the same as a 9700 pro at around $400. i believe its also running on DDR2 if im not mistaken.

if i had the money to get a new card it would probably that. if you're wanting to spend half the price, i would get a ti4200 w/ 8x and 128 mb ram. if you are an ati fan, you could get a 9500 and overclock it to a 9700 though without spending $200 more.
