SHOHAM FIRING RANGE, Israel — Veterans of Israeli anti-terror units yesterday demonstrated a new gun that can fire at a target from around the corner, making it particularly effective in urban combat.

Israel plans to start using the weapon next week, U.S. forces have begun training with it, and U.S. SWAT and police teams have expressed interest in purchasing it, Amos Golan, the device's developer, said at a demonstration at a firing range near Tel Aviv.

"The Americans are very interested in this," Golan said. "I believe from what I have seen and heard that it can be a big success in Iraq because the Americans are dealing with an urban area there."

The device swivels at the middle, 63 degrees to the left or right, with the stock, trigger and the small screen at the handheld end. The entire firing mechanism, fitted with a pistol that sits over a minicamera with a zoom lens, is located at the front end.

A lever positioned under the stock allows the user to quickly move the firing end to another position to better focus on the target.

The device can be fitted with different kinds of pistols, including the Baretta 92, which the U.S. Army uses; the Glock; and the Colt. It can also be adapted to fit an M-16 rifle or tear-gas launcher.

The camera has a range of 200 to 400 yards, depending on the model. Accessories include an infrared laser illuminator, rubber-bullet launcher, various lenses and a silencer. A socket allows the shooter to film action in a room around the corner and transmit the images to commanders far away.

Golan thought of the idea for the weapon after years of pondering a failed Israeli army operation in the West Bank during the first Palestinian uprising in the late 1980s. Several Israeli soldiers were wounded when they stormed a house through the door and were hit by automatic fire shot from inside, Golan said.

Armies from 15 countries are testing the system, said Golan, a former deputy commander of Israel's anti-terror unit. The weapon is produced by Corner Shot Holdings, an Israeli-American company based in Coral Gables, Fla.

The weapon system, which costs between $3,000 and $5,000, will be sold only to official government agencies, Golan said.

Pretty neato, damn expensive too.

Pfft, I thought the bullets themselves would travel around corners. Once again, humanity disappoints me. Pathetic.

Demosthenes 2003-12-18 06:29 PM

Yea...i thought the bullets were gonna zip around corners...intresting idea nevertheless

Grav 2003-12-18 06:57 PM

That isn't the OICW, is it? If so, welcome to 1999.

I remember hearing about those along time ago. I also remember hearing about homing bullets that target in on laser signals. Those were neat. They might be able to go around corners. The head of the bullet is a half sphere and a cone, and has a sensor on the tip of the cone, and a swiveling motors on the ball (or tendons or something) that move the head around to turn the bullet's direction to wherever the laser light is. In the demonstration they had a sniper take out an M1 tank at quite a distance, with 1 bullet, 1 measily low grade bullet that can home. He fired it, and another guy pointed a laser for it to home in on, onto the tank's magazine (which is barely visible). Boom.

I dont know the actual caliber of the homing bullet, but it was fired out of a standard rifle.

I dunno if its new or not but it sounds new so I posted it, and Grav posted here so it must have some importance if it was enough to get Grav in here....

Lol, you mean you guys still use bullets?!

Roflmao, what century did you guys come from. Why don't be a little modern and use Dual Nuclear Blast Laser Pistols with lasers that can zip through walls. Newbs ;).

Bah, that kind of killing is pointless. A slice throat approach seem much more interesting and much more intimate

Sovereign 2003-12-19 04:10 AM

you worry me -_-. Anywho, does anybody know of pictures for this weapon?

Eddie_Perez 2003-12-19 04:23 AM

Um, cant grenades be thrown around the corner with no perticular aiming required?

Sovereign 2003-12-19 04:23 AM

Yea but im pretty sure they dont have the range of a bullit.

Eddie_Perez 2003-12-19 04:28 AM

quikspy67 2003-12-19 08:34 AM

Jimbo 2003-12-19 10:19 AM

Yeah, I meant to post a picture but It would not show up. Ill post another good pic when I get home.

J_iceman 2003-12-19 11:19 AM

if you look at the picture, the gun isn't even aimed at the (people) objects!!! the one with the remote control armored car is even better!!

That's because since it's around a corner, he doesn't know exactly where they are, so he slowly sticks the gun around the corner checking out the whole area... therefor he hasn't spotted them yet! Quite an amazing concept eh?

J_iceman 2003-12-19 08:19 PM

eeh, i'd rather go trigger happy on those foos.
thats the reason they made shot guns!
