Holy crap: MediaDefender's emails get leaked

If you don't know who MediaDefender is, Wikipedia says: "MediaDefender is a company which offers services designed to prevent and stop people who engage in peer-to-peer copyright infringement, using tactics such as flooding peer-to-peer networks with decoy files that tie up a user's computer."

This isn't just a few emails, it's 700MB worth. Going back for months.

At first we couldn't believe that it was real, but after we scanned through the e-mails it became clear that it was indeed the real deal. Hundreds of IPs and logins to their servers, lists of their decoy/entrapment trackers, decoy strategies, the effectiveness of their fake torrents (in many cases with a breakdown of success, title specific), high and low priority sites, .torrent watchlists, information on their monitoring of competitors, pictures of their weekend trips and even the anti-piracy strategy for dealing with The Simpsons Movie leak:

# REMINDER: "The Simpson's Movie" premieres this Friday (to Torrents).

* Decoy files are available in torrents MDfile server.
* Use Public Trackers for pre-Leak releases.
* Create two new trackers for this project.
o Ebert to inform Torrents of these new machines.
* Send a list of 5 release names from each torrent team member to Ebert.
* REMEMBER to input torrent file into interdiction if a real Leak is available this weekend.
Read here, it is very interesting: http://torrentfreak.com/mediadefende...leaked-070915/

Lol, private torrent sites are going bonkers over this.

Oh man... I don't want to be in their shoes.

Probably the best part (besides the fact that they are serving up copyrighted material... check their FTPs!) is that they are using AVG Free Edition for their emails.

"AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is for private, non-commercial, single computer use only. The use of AVG Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited."

LMAO! I love this! Can't you just see everyone all over the world laughing at them the exact way we are. The more you read the worse it gets for those guys.
Do you have all the emails Grav?

I don't really understand what happened here. Someone wanna sum it up?

WetWired 2007-09-16 03:55 PM

All of the company's emails for the past 6 months have been leaked. They pretty much have no secrets anymore.

Dar_Win 2007-09-16 05:05 PM

Can they get in trouble for releasing decoy files that "tie up" a users computer?

WetWired 2007-09-16 06:43 PM

No. A decoy file is just a waste of space. It doesn't do anything malicious at it's destination, bandwidth is simply wasted downloading the wrong thing.

Willkillforfood 2007-09-16 08:01 PM

WW, can they get in trouble for breaking licenses with AVG free home edition, etc? They were using it for commercial purposes when it was not allowed =D.

WetWired 2007-09-16 08:31 PM

Probably

D3V 2007-09-17 11:03 AM

That's if AVG acts upon it. Pretty funny to read this, what a bunch of morons, probably have some idiot working in a scan room or something surfing pr0n and getting a trojan onto their computer.

Long story short: Anti-piracy company spoofing illegal downloads and recording IPs, while using pirated corporate software.
