I don't care, I've just seen HDRI used way too much on things that shouldn't even be used on. Go around CGTalk and you'll have 3dsmax newbies slapping on HDRI on everything they get their hands on.

PS: There ARE better ways than HDRI, I don't know specifically, because as you stated, I don't know this subject as well as I would like to.
