I'm taking a Sociology of Deviant Behavior course for a Liberal Elective this term, and I have to outline a Chapter for tomorrow. I just came across this:

Female Genital Mutilation:

Euphemistically called "female circumcision," female genital mutilation involves cutting off the female genitals in one of four ways. (1) The prepuce, the clitoris' foreskin, is removed. (2) The entire clitoris is amputated, an operation called "clitoridectomy." (3) Both the clitoris and labia minora, and labia majora, are removed, and then the vulva is infibulated - stitched together to preserve only a tiny opening that makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible. This last procedure is called "pharaonic circumcision."

The first three types of genital mutilation account for 80 to 85 percent of all femal genital mutilation, while the fourth type accounts for 15 to 20 percent.

The gential mutilation is performed on girls aged 4 to 14, and it has been practiced as part of the African culture for hundreds of eyars, although only in the last decade did it begin to attract a great deal of international attention and condemnation.
