There are 3 Prime Evils, and 3 Lesser Evils.
Primes were:
Diablo
Baal
Mephisto

Lessers were:
Andariel
Duriel
Belial
some other dude

I wouldn't be opposed to D3 being in the past, but it doesn't really feel like a progressive series that way.
