Honestly, I always start out building a house (if it's a town-type map). It can take a bit to get the hang of it (or it's just me - some days I can't even get it and I've been doing it for 3 years now ), and it's good practice to see how to lay out everything else on the map.

Just something I've always done to get the creative juices flowing.
