My beautiful day

So far, this weekend has absolutely sucked. I didn't do anything that I planned on doing on saturday. Friday night, I went to bed around two, like I do just about every day on the weekend. Five in the morning, I wake up to sheets of rain pounding down on my window. I lay in bed until seven, but manage to get no more sleep. I wake up obiviously groggy and grumpy as hell. I hardly sleep on the weekdays anyway, so this is usually when I catch up, but not this weekend. Anyway, after that, my Saturday turned even worse. Here's the whole story:

Originally, on my desktop I had a dual-boot configuration between RedHat 7.3 and Windows 98. It was a nice little setup. I could easily boot into whichever OS I wanted to. As time passed, something went wrong, and Windows 98 crashed. I decided to upgrade to XP. I don't know what happend, but the XP installation wiped out my Linux partition.

I decided XP was fine. I'd stick with it. It was far more stable than Windows 98.

Albeit being much better than its predecessor, it still had many problems. First of all, for some unknown reason, it refused to detect my sound card, which worked perfectly with Windows 98, and even with a Slackware-live CD. On top of that, since it was afterall a Microsoft product, it was very susceptible to viruses, adware/spyware/malware, all of which I got a good bit of. Finally, when I got my new monitor, it drove XP insane. It would boot up fine, and then at random times send lines down my screen and freeze my computer up. That finally convinced me that something had to be done.

I liked Linux, so I decided I would install that on my computer. I had planned on formatting my computer today, and installing Fedora Core 1 on it. It was supposed to be around a two hour project. Well, I started working on it at seven this morning, and I have had nothing but bad-luck on top of even more bad-luck.

Once I woke up, I started downloading Fedora. Even on broadband, the download takes a good bit of time. It is a 1.8 Gigabyte OS. It took about three hours finishing that. Unfortunately, being the fool that I am, I even fucked that up.

I wanted to back up about 11 gigabytes of media, which brings me to my first problem. My dad, for some reason, down not want to set up a home network. I had planned to just back all my data up on my laptop by dragging and dropping. Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as that. I couldn't access my own fucking laptop from my desktop because my dad hasn't permitted me to set up a home network for god knows what reason. The easiest way I could think of sending all my files to my laptop was through aim. Now, if you have ever transferred files via aim, you know that you can't transfer an entire folder. I didn't want to drag and drop each file individually, so I decided I'd make a zip file. The first time I did it, it failed, saying that there was not enough memory to create the zip file. I deleted some stuff, and tried again. I got the same fucking response. Now, realize that zipping 10 gigs of data is no small ordeal. Each time I did that took a fucking hour just to fail. Eventually, I divided the zip file up into two parts and sent them seperately. I know there are probably much more efficient ways to do this, but oh well. After all this was said and done, it was around two (including shower and lunch/breakfast and some little breaks.)

After I backed up all the data I needed to, I went to go retrieve my newly burned CD's. I came back with them, pretty excited that this chore would finally be over in an hour or so. I formatted my computer, and put them in. Nothing happend. Apparently, from the time that I last used XP, till now, something had fucked over my CD drive. I had to take the CD out and put it back in about 20 times, rebooting the computer every time, before I could get the installer to even load up. I get to the installer, and it gave me a message basically saying I had downloaded the wrong ISO's. I had downloaded the ISOs for the 64 bit processor instead of the 32. (My computer is 4+ years old) Back to redownloading and reburning the ISOs.

Once I had finished redownloading the ISOs for the 32 bit processor, I went back to my computer, hoping everything would be all fine and dandy. I have to go through the same process again, put in CD, hope it works, reboot, put in CD, hope it works, reboot, except this time it took even longer than before. Once I finally got to the installer screen, I answered all the normal questions a Windows installer would ask you and kept pushing next, next, next . . . . BANG! Another shot towards my fucking sanity. The CD was corrupt. I reburn the CD again, put the CD in, hoped it worked, reboot . . . and when I finally get it working, I get the same message about the CD being corrupt. At that point, I just said fuck it, I'm going to work on it later.

That has been my day so far. Pretty damn crappy. Right now I have a desktop with a frozen Linux installer screen on it, and nothing else. Hopefully, I can get this whole thing sorted out by tomorrow.

That is pretty fucking gay. Man that sux, I went without my computer for a wek and it drove me crazy. All because one of my bros friends forgot to bring his Windows 98SE CD and he didn't realize that until after he formatted the PC and when it was at the point where you had to put the cd in to instal windows. At that point the PC is completely wiped. I was fucking pissed off.
