Gameboy DS costs $200?

Anyone plan on picking one up for $200 or are you going to be waiting for the PSP?

Here is the article:
http://news.com.com/The+new+Game+Boy...l?tag=nefd.top

Nintendo's new handheld game player will cost $200 and arrive in stores in plenty of time for Christmas, according to a Wal-Mart Web page that appears to spill the beans.

Walmart.com recently posted a preorder page for the Nintendo DS, the advanced handheld game player the Japanese game giant announced earlier this year.

Though Nintendo has yet to reveal pricing or an on-sale date for the device, Wal-Mart says it will cost $199.82 and be in the hot little hands of gamers around Nov. 30.

A Nintendo representative called those specifics rumors and said the company has not yet settled on a price or availability date for the DS.

The DS is Nintendo's attempt to extend its lead in the portable gaming market, long dominated by the company's Game Boy players. The DS is intended to be a more technologically advanced device than the current Game Boy Advance, with dual touch-sensitive screens, support for 3D graphics and wireless connectivity for multiplayer gaming and text messaging. The device will play both Game Boy Advance cartridges and games developed specifically for the DS on a new, higher-capacity media format.

The DS will arrive as Nintendo faces its most serious competition to date for the handheld gaming market, with Sony preparing to deliver its PlayStation Portable, a mobile complement to its market-leading home console. The PSP will sport an advanced screen, fast processor and a new 1.8GB media format adaptable to movies and music.

Schelley Olhava, an analyst for researcher IDC, said she expects the PSP to arrive on the market early next year priced between $200 and $250. If that happens, it could make the DS a tough sell at $200.

"I think that's really high," she said of the Wal-Mart price, if correct. "Nintendo has always come in as the lower-cost, mass-market option, and in this case they're going to be compared to the PSP."

Nintendo earlier this month trimmed the price of the Game Boy Advance, a move seen as helping prepare the market for the DS.

I can think of so many better uses for $200 than a friggin' Game Boy...

1) It's not a Game Boy.

2) The PSP is going to have to cost at least 50 bucks more. Probably more like 100 bucks more, though. On top of that, the PSP is little more than a portable PS2. What's the point in owning one unless you're really jazzed about playing Vice City on the go? The DS offers gaming design you simply can't get anywhere else. Hence the reason the $200 price tag makes perfect sense.

For a Nintendo handheld, the $200 pricetag is a little high, and in light of that, I would assume that it's going to cost reasonably less than Wal-Mart's quote. Never trust retail outlets on forecasted MSRP or release dates. They only rarely get it right.

Absolutely. Nintendo has owned 99.8% of the handheld market for over a decade for a very good list of reasons. They know portables, and even if the $200 pricetag is accurate, I'll be picking one up regardless. It'll be worth every penny. In Nintendo we trust.

I'll wait for the price to go down first. But in the end, yes, I'll probably end up getting one.

After the first price drop. By then, there will be a decent library of games to choose from (and the launch titles will probably be on sale as well..)

Definetly getting one, but I won't be like the retards that sleep in front of the store so when the store opens, they get first dibs on it.

I believe it started out at $80, and the newer one at $100.

No, it isn't. It's not the Gameboy DS, it's just the Nintendo DS. This handheld isn't replacing the GBA, it will sell alongside it.

And that's not the official price. Walmart does this every time a new piece of videogame hardware comes out and they always get it wrong. Nintendo won't release it for more than $150. They know the portable market, and as such, they'll cater to the desires of the public.

Both the GBA and GBA SP started at $100 apiece.

Pick up Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow or Metroid Zero Mission. Then you won't feel like the GBA is a waste.

I don't play handhelds enough to justify the cost. The only time there's a reason for me to play a game away from home, I have my laptop on me.

That's alotta money for ... that.

Gameboy isn't any fun at all, their games are so low quality, if you wanted to spend 200 bucks and spend 30 on games, get a damn XBOX or PS2.

I've played a Hell load of Gameboy games. I've had the origional gray block. The color when it came out, and advanced. And it's progressionally gotten worse.

I'd rather waste my money on a console that has great titles for it, and is actually worth playing. I mean shit, you can play better games on a cell phone, than you can on a gameboy.

Nintendo + Handheld = Gameboy to me.

To be honest, last handheld thing I used was a original Gameboy, and that was when I was playing Bases Loaded 2.

I don't do a whole lot of console gaming.
