Actually everywhere I go people are very surprised when I tell them I'm from the south. I supposedly have more of a yank accent (Northern/Eastern) than anything. It's quite neutral and I can pass for various nationalities when overseas (I am also half-Canadian) since I never admit to being American unless I am comfortable.
My mom, however, has a pretty heavy accent and I spent most of my time living with her (my dad moved away) so it doesn't make much sense.
