CNN Predicts PS3 Price at $500

Bringers of Doom!

----------

After talking with many developers and industry analysts CNN is predicting a $500 price tag for the PS3. The main reason for the price jump is the Blu-Ray components. After a CES announcement that the first stand-alone Blu-Ray player would cost $1,800 speculation began anew about the PS3’s price. Developers have quoted between 399-699, and Merrill Lynch estimated the PS3’s cost, a little over a month after E3, at $494 without labor.

Interesting. I suppose we can only wait and see.

Then again, that's actually not that much. In pounds that comes to just over £250. I was expecting something like £300 and over.

Of course, it's a lot more than the 360, but you are paying for something that does a lot more, and is better.

You've got to admire Sony though. They have the most restraint I've ever seen. No-one but those high up in Sony know any od the details. For a big company, and for a massive console, they sure have kept us in the dark extremely well.

Sony said the stand alone Blu-Ray players would be $1k I believe.

Don't believe CNN, or any other News site when it comes to the release date and price. They always over specualte in these areas. Sony cannot afford to sell it for $500. The higher the price, the less consoles they sell which means a larger money loss. Remember, over time it costs less to produce, so in turn they evenutally make a bit of money.

Also, if they sell it for too much, then they will not make as much money on hardware(accessories) and software which in turn causes a larger loss. Remember, this is were they make most of their money.

Sony has their own plan and schedule that they are following, people seem to think Sony is gonna give us info at certain events because "they have to" which is not true. They release it when they feel it is the best time too and when they are ready.

$1800. For the BR Players.

Well, Sony have been saying themselves for I don't know however long that there will be a Spring launch. I'm guessing that'll be sometime around May, or just after E3. If that is the case they haven't got long to start releasing any major details.

I sometimes think of these things like the Russian War Machine type thing. THink how long it would take Russia to call up all their men to arms, and to actually arm them and get them sorted to attack. In WWI they took 8 weeks. That's two months.

Now think of the gaming industry. Everything will need to be co-ordinated. Game makers and console manufacturers can't just start sending out games to the masses. THink of UT2007 coming out as a launch title (which it is) a month or two before the PS3.

For something of the scale Sony are maybe planning (world-wide release) they will need a lot of planning. So if they are going to get their Spring launch done, they need to start some time soon.

I doubt it'll have two 20gb Harddrives.

Though it does have a lot of ports.

It is going to be faulty, like the 360, but not as much. Sony have had far longer to play with their hardware than Microsoft had, and so have had time to iron out any major bugs and flaws.

If it gets anymore expensive than $500, I wouldn't expect the sales to do that good..

I found this a while back. I don't know trustworthy it is, but it's worth a look (because it took me a while to dig it up).

http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell0_v2.html

From page 2:
Quote:
The final specifications haven't been given out yet but this is what we know so far:

Capable of running at speeds beyond 4 GHz.
Memory bandwidth: 25.6 GBytes per second.
I/O bandwidth: 76.8 GBytes per second.
256 GFLOPS (Single precision at 4 GHz).
256 GOPS (Integer at 4 GHz).
25 GFLOPS (Double precision at 4 GHz).
235 square mm.
235 million transistors.

Power consumption has been estimated at 60 - 80 Watts at 4 GHz for the prototype but this could change in the production version.

Chip manufacturing is a complex process and the chips that appear at the end of the production line vary in capabilities and some have errors. While they can go higher, because of the vagaries of manufacturing, economics and heat dissipation the Cell which will be used in the PS3 is clocked at 3.2 GHz and will have only 7 SPEs. Cells with 6 SPEs will be used in consumer electronics.

It's also said, ever so nearly confirmed, that it will run at 120fps.

We can only wait for the PS3 conferences in a month or two for, hopefully, final specs and a release date and price to be confirmed.

Also, I'll have a read of that sometime Bob, it sounds interesting. Nice find.
