Is your video card particularly old? It has trouble with new video cards, maybe it's with newer versions of Direct X, I can't remember. Regardless, it plays too fast (about triple speed) on my laptop without compatibility mode and it's listed as a problem in the tech support section of the developer's website.

It could be the Athlon 64 x2, I've found that it causes various peculiarities. Something that is broken on this video card is DVD playback...
