PersonalComputer

The idea just struck me in the face: Why not make an option in the menu to access your personal computer? My game takes place in the future, so it wouldn't be awkward for there to be people with handheld computers everywhere, and I think it would be a nice addition to my game.
Using a cursor as a sprite, you could essentially just move it around your desktop screen, and hover over the icons to highlight them, and press enter to access them. Why put this in my game? Well, just think of the possibilities, as you could have the Internet, a paint program, and a music player. Not only could you download files from other's computers, you could hack into security systems to bypass the troubles of taking out every single guard. Because the setting is in a more communistic, fascist, environment, almost all the Internet sites would be gone, except for a news site, multimedia site, etc. When you complete certain things, like destroy a sentry robot, you could plug into him to receive data, pass codes, and the like. But I'm having it so that when you beat the game, you get a string of numbers and letters that when you enter it into an interface beside a locked door in a very important place in the game, you get access to an area where there are tons of items weapons, info, and even a secret character.

My question is, how do you get there to be an input? like, how would you allow the player to type in a series of numbers and letters? Thanks.

There's the normal Input commad that allows you to input numbers.

So if you make the keypad beside the door into an event the hero has to action key:

<> Input Number: 7 Digit, [0001]
<> Branch if Var [0001] is 1234567
<> Open Door
: Else Handler
<>
: End
<>

SO it uses the "Input Number" from page 1 of events. That input number is then stored as a Variable, in this case variable 1 - say the password is 1234567.

The Conditional Branch then checks to see if the Variable [0001] equals 1234567. If it does, it opens the door.

Btw, with the Input Number event you can only have 7 digits.

----

As for letters as well as digits, I don't know if you can. If you can, then expect BC to jump in with the answer.

EDIT: Methinks "Key Input Processing" can be used as well - as long as it's stored as a variable again.

No letters, but in theory you'd input a hero's name and see if it equals whatever your password should be. Of course this is assuming you have the Input Hero Name patch that's floating around out there (which still doesn't fully repair the function, so it's not that useful).

Key Input Processing is possible, but it still doesn't check for letter keys, and you'd have to have a separate variable for each key you put in. It also doesn't display the key you press directly (unlike Input Number) and isn't as hassle-free for checking the input.
