Please tell me why anyone would idolize Poe.

Besides "the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain," I don't see anything positive about the man.

His life sucked, he was an opium addict, he didn't recieve any praise for his work during his life, his father detested him, his family and loved ones all died early during his life. I suppose writing through the pain is your reason to list him as an idol.

I would only assume the greatness of the poetry is because of the pain. That said, to be a poet such as Poe, one must live a life such as Poe. None of us want that.
