Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
The Soultaker
Hellsing
Heat Guy J
Gungrave
Last Exile
Wolf's Rain
Bastard!!
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Spriggan

I'd really like to start collecting Fullmetal Alchemist, but I keep hearing that it's gonna be something like 20 discs long, and I don't have that kind of scratch.

Yes, it most certainly is. It clawed its way very deep into my heart after I realized that all of the kingdoms and most of Dark Schneider's spells are named after metal bands.

Raz, it's 51 episodes + a movie.

On any non pirated release, the most episodes I've seen on one disk is 5. At least 11 disks :-\
So, if I do the math...

that comes out to...

somewhere around 275 smackers to own the entire series.

FUCK THAT.

I don't own a single piece of legit anime material, except a copy of Spirited Away, but my little siblings watch that since I never really liked it.

First, I would be embarassed to buy any anime merchandise except online. I try to walk quickly past the manga in the local bookstore as I see what the other people in that section look like. Ugh.

Second, I can't afford their insane prices. It's like $30 for 4 episodes on a DVD.

I bought most of my anime at a comic book store before I was Army. I think I actually kept that place in business :P

I don't get it, why buy it, when you can just download it for free, and make hard copy.

Because some people like following the law and rewarding the people that create the content they enjoy.
