A cyclone hit Myanmar, not a tornado. It was a Category 3, bringing 120 mph winds and 12-foot storm surges.

What scale are you thinking of for tornadoes? The Fujita Scale's F4 is quite devestating and rare; equivalent to the EF5, whereas the Enhanced Fujita Scale's EF4 is the equivalent to an F3.

I can't believe that their military is refusing U.S. aid efforts.

Are you serious? They are refusing efforts, we're having to force aid to them as they are similar to a buddhist state that believes they are self efficient and don't need help from anybody. Their own ignorance is going to have more people killed from disease and starvation/dehydration.

I never hear the word "cyclone" used much here in the states. We call the water-based ones water spouts.

A hurricane and a tornado aren't even remotely similar, other than the fact that they spin.

Cyclone is used for both tornadoes and hurricanes for some reason over near Australia, etc. Water spouts are tornadoes that are over water, not hurricanes.

If a tornado and a hurricane are both cyclones then a water tornado would be a hurricane.

I was stating that a cyclone formed over water is a hurricane. I've never heard of a "spout" but I don't doubt the phrase is used somewhere. I do know that tornados can go onto water, but usually are not that destructive.

No. A tornado formed over water is not a hurricane normally in the U.S. If you wanted to you could call it that since it falls under the broad definition of a hurricane, but everyone would just think you were stupid.

Well the point is that Myanmar got hit by a tornado (I don't fucking care if it was land based or water based). And WKFF is right, a tornado started in the water is called a water spout in the states.

Why are you guys even arguing? You all are forgetting to mention Typhoons, which are the Hurricanes over there. You are all right and wrong. Cyclones by definition are anything that spins for the most part, but nobody refers to Tornadoes as Cyclones, hardly ever. Cyclones are only used over in the dead sea area where the one had just hit Myanmar. Cyclones, Typhoons and Hurricanes are all essentially the same things. They all form over water, all have destructive winds and all form and maintain shape in a swirling motion.

Basically, everyone just STFU.
